In North Carolina over one-fourth of all children under age 6 attend some form
of childcare. Quality teaching depends on a strong foundation provided by
excellent personnel preparation and appropriate wage based compensation.
Providing adequate opportunities for child care teachers to increase their
education and compensation remain a challenge.
Project CONTACT (College Opportunity Networks and Technical Assistance for Childcare Teachers) is a distance learning effort that will afford teachers an opportunity to earn college credits via a learning environment that is accessible, affordable, and convenient. With funding from NC Department of Health and Human Services and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Project CONTACT will research and pilot model strategies for the adaptation and delivery of early childhood education at a distance.
